“Headstart Cup”
Hong Kong Inter-Secondary School Scrabble Championship 2018

Headstart Group is partnering with Hong Kong Scrabble Players Association (HKSPA) to organize Headstart Cup Inter-Secondary School Scrabble Championship 2018, an open Scrabble Championship for all local secondary schools.

Headstart Cup aims to provide a platform for secondary school Scrabble players to play competitively and to foster friendship through playing this meaningful and famous word game. This game can also enhance students’ language skills and spelling ability. Headstart Cup is specially created to recognise students’ outstanding achievement and to celebrate Headstart Group’s 10th year anniversary.

On 3rd March 2018(Saturday), the one-day event of the Championship for all local secondary school players, will be held. In the light of the success from Headstart Group 2017, the number of participants for Headstart Cup 2018 will expand from 140 to 180 students. Also, a new award for the top player per school, the Most Valuable Player (MVP), will introduce in this championship.

As there are doubts over the legality of Scrabble tournaments with prize money in Hong Kong, for the safety of our players, there will only be trophies and medals for our winners.

About Scrabble

Scrabble is a word board game in which two players score points by placing tiles, each bearing a single letter, onto a game board which is divided into a 15×15 grid of squares in order to form words scoring as many points as possible.

The letter tiles each have a score value, which serve as the basis to calculate a score for each play made. The least frequently used letters in the English lexicon have the highest score values. The game board has several colored “premium” squares which boost the values of individual letters or entire words, as tiles are set down over these squares. The object of the game is to outscore your opponent.

Competitive Scrabble follows global standard rules, the WESPA Rules Version 3, and a standard word list, Collins Scrabble Words 2015. Competitive Scrabble is a kind of Mind Sport.

Rules and Regulations

WESPA Rules Version 3

WESPA Rules Version 3 is for use in English-language word game tournaments. They establish international standards designed to facilitate play between players whose domestic norms may differ. These Rules apply at the World Championship and at tournaments organised and run by WESPA.
