About Super Speller

Headstart Group proudly hosts Super Speller, a spelling competition, every year to promote primary school students’ interest in learning English, particularly in highlighting the importance of phonics, pronunciation, listening and spelling skills. It is a fun and exciting event for primary 1 to primary 3 students and has been receiving great numbers of contestants.

Objective of the event:
• To help young learners develop an awareness of good English pronunciation
• To improve their spelling and vocabulary building abilities
• To enhance their skills in correct English usage

Together, these skills and abilities will serve to establish in our learners a strong English foundation which will benefit them for their lifetime.

DEFINITIONS

Judges

• The persons who decide whether a word is spelt correctly.

Pronouncer

• The person who reads out the words.

Score keeper

• The person who keeps scores for the participants.

Sub-round

• The competitions within each round.

Time Keeper

a) The person who allows 10 seconds for each participant to spell a word.
b) For the competition, the person who allows 5 minutes for the preliminary round, 8 minutes for the semi-final round and 12 minutes for the final round.

LANGUAGE

• The competition will be conducted in English. ( British and American English )
• The pronouncer will read out the words in British English. The judges will accept both British and American English spelling.

OFFICIAL DICTIONARY

• The event will use Large Print English Dictionary published by Peter Haddock Ltd, Bridlington, England @1999 Children’s Leisure Products Ltd., ISBN 0 7105 1112 4 and Scholastic Children’s Dictionary, Usborne Publishing Ltd, June 2002 as official dictionaries.

DECISIONS

• There will be two judges for the competition. Decisions from the judges are final.

SILENCE

• During the competition, silence must be kept to ensure participants can hear the pronouncer without interruption.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

• Participants must wear school uniform for the competition.

HOW WILL THE WORDS BE READ OUT

• The pronouncer will say: “Please spell… as in.…”
• E.g. “Please spell ‘sky’ as in ‘We can see stars in the sky.”

TIME

• In each round, a participant has 10 seconds to spell a word.
• Preliminary Round: each competition will last for 5 minutes.
• Semi-final Round: each competition will last for 8 minutes.
• Final Round: each competition will last for 12 minutes.

HOW TO WIN – ‘KNOCK OUT’

• In each competition, the participant who has the largest number of ‘correct words’ will be the winner. There will be two winners in each sub-round under the preliminary and semi-final rounds.
• If two or more participants have the same number of ‘correct words’, the participant who has that number of correct words first will be the winner.

FIRST-MOVER

• The first participant to signal to spell will get the chance to spell.

HOW TO SUBMIT THE SPELLING

• The participant needs say the letters then the word to finish submission.
• E.g. “s k y ” then say the word to finish submission.

HOW TO KNOW IF A WORD IS SPELT CORRECTLY

• The Chief Judge will ring the bell, one ‘ring’ signifies a correct spelling, two ‘rings’ signify an incorrect spelling.

RE-SPELLING

• No re-spell is allowed.
• No re-spelling by another participant is allowed.

LATE COMER

• If and when a participant arrives after his/her round of competition has started, he/she will be considered a late comer. We regret that late comer will be disqualified.

PRIZE GIVING CEREMONY

• Prize giving ceremony will follow the final round of the competition.

CHANGES AND AMENDMENTS

• The event organiser reserves the right to change or amend any rules or regulations when necessary.

NUMBER OF AUDIENCE

• Each participant may be accompanied by one parent to attend the event. Each school may have one representative to attend the event.

Chief Judge

An experienced native English teacher who has been teaching at kindergartens and secondary schools in Hong Kong. He has a degree in English and History from the National University of Ireland Maynooth and a TEFL qualification.

Managing Director

Graduated with a Bachelor of Language Studies (English) from The Open University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. With her 12 years of experience in the education industry and 5 of them in management, Miss Julie has shown complete passion for what she does. She strongly feels that education holds to key to a sustainable and prosperous society.

Phonological Awareness Workshop

Super Speller 2017 Phonological Awareness Workshop

For participating schools, a one hour Phonological Awareness Workshop will be held upon request from 1st to 16th December 2016.

The objectives of this workshop are:

• Strengthens students’ phonological awareness
• Distinguish alphabet names and alphabet sounds
• Blending using different alphabet sounds
